BELIEVE IN ME
(Words and Music by Rick Springfield)

They'll be a time when everyone is left alone, and I'll have mine.
There is no doubt when everyone has worn me out and gone.
When everybody's had their fill,
she'll be waiting, she's waiting still.
And though she doesn't know I know,
I know she wouldn't mind.

Cause having someone believe in me is all I need to know.
And standing all alone,
is not the way I want to go.
And if I get to be a star, or maybe nowhere near that far.
I know that either way it doesn't matter much to her.
And if I'm on my dying bed and suddenly my life is bled
away from me, I know she'll shed a tear because she cares.

Cause having someone believe in me is all I need to know.
And standing all alone,
is not the way I want to go.

Cause having someone believe in me is all I need to know.
And standing all alone,
is not the way I want to go.

And if I get to be a star, or maybe no where near that far.
I know that either way it doesn't matter much to her.
And if I'm on my dying bed and suddenly my life is bled
away from me, I know she'll shed a tear because she cares.

Cause having someone believe in me is all I need to know.
And standing all alone,
is not the way I want to go, to go

I just found my copy of Comic Book Heroes---I have never listened to it much to be honest and after listening to it this morning on my way
into work, I realize , I really, really like most of these songs. I love his whispery, sexy tone of voice on this song, and most of the songs on here. This is a wonderful, sweet song, and again, he was
fairly young when it came out and it amazes me that a male his age at the time has these feelings, most could care less at that age.

This song also gives me some incite as to why he loves the true fans so much.  I'm sure he knows we all "believe in him". "Standing all alone is not the way I want to go"---even at that young age he realized how important it was to have someone special to stand by you when the world has "had their fill" and "worn me out and gone".

This song is wonderful. I love him.

I love this song,  It's definitely my favorite song on this record.  I wonder if there really was someone who existed that was an inspiration for this song, or if it was a dream person that he made up, wishing she existed, because I'm sure that's what he needed.  He didn't know how successful he was going to be, and he needed someone that would be there whether he made it or not.   If he made it, what's the point if you don't have someone to share it with, and if he didn't, he'd definitely need someone to help him move on.

Another one that make you go <sigh>.   Like he found someone that instead of always trying to get a piece of him like everyone else, was someone that was going to be there to pick up the pieces for him when he crashed and burned so-to-speak.

Someone very unconditional. A true friend. Someone unaffected by what was going on with and around him. Again there is the theme of "confidence" that he had from other people. In this one, again he speaks of the uncertainty of his future, but it's like he isn't so afraid to face his future and his path, because of the love and friendship of this person. He's not so afraid to fall/fail because he knows this person will be there to "catch" him if that happens.

I think this one is my second favorite on CBH.   This sounds so honest and sincere, it's one of those songs that make women sigh.  It makes me believe that if Rick didn't have that "she" already, he knew what he wanted to find in her.  Someone who'd love him no matter what, whether he succeeded or failed, that would be there for him.  You can hear the uncertainty in his voice even then, that maybe perhaps there would be no fame and fortune received by following his dreams.  For the woman he is singing about though, she doesn't want that, she just wants him.

This song carries a great message with it, for whatever you are trying to achieve.  Greatness cannot be celebrated alone, and it is much sweeter with someone to share it with.

I'm surprised nobody has not dug out the video for the recording of this song.  For those of you who haven't seen it, you can see in the clip that this song meant a lot to Rick and he worked very hard during the recording to get it to sound just like he wanted it. (okay, we know he probably does that with all his songs now, but back then we didn't know he was such a perfectionist)  The voice-over is what is hilarious, the commentator is describing the young and up & coming heartthrob Rick Springfield hard at work in the recording studio...

I think this is one of the sweetest songs Rick has written (not the #1 sweetest but it's at the top) and probably the only one on this album that I wouldn't get tired of.  This is more of the fairy-tale come true kind of song rather than a comic book.  Everyone hopes to someday find that one person who loves you unconditionally, no matter who you are, forgives the mistakes you've made or are going to make.  Obviously he wasn't singing about his wife back then, maybe he wasn't singing about anyone in particular but about a longing to have that someone, someday...
