MISTY
WATER WOMAN
by Rick Springfield
I was driving 'round
As the sun went down
When I came upon a lake
The sign said Misty Water
And standing there
With wet and tangled hair
Was a girl
She said her name was Bo
She was a farmer's daughter
I said get in, I'll take you home
You must be cold
Misty water woman
You never get to her
Misty water woman
You never get to touch her
And feel her near
Began to storm
And our talk grew warm
'Till I stopped the car outside a cold and lonely place
I said we're here
But she had disappeared
And on the seat was a pool of tears
And a handkerchief of lace
I did not see her leave
I was amazed
Misty water woman
You never get to her
Misty water woman
You never get to touch her
And feel her warmth
I fled into the house
I begged her father and her mother
To straighten me out
What was it all about?
Please let me know
She looked sad, and he looked mad
And he said, yes you're right
Once we had a daughter
Her name was Bo
But that was long ago
Years have gone since she drowned at Misty Water.
And the way they took it
Took me by surprise
Misty water woman
You never get to her
Misty apparition
You never get to touch her
And feel her near
(total playing time: 4:37)

I'm not fond of this one. Don't
get me wrong, I'm a horror junkie, Stephen King groupie all the way...but not when it
comes to my music. I think my main beef about this one is that it just seems
too damn long. I figured out the "mystery" by the end of the first verse.
Also, who in the heck names their daughter Bo? Is she related to Hooky Jo?
Pat, I'd like to buy an "e".
Misty Water Woman, sounds like a perfume or at the very least some kind of foo-foo drink
you'd order at a bar.
So Rick's driving around, tells a spooky chick to get in his car without a second thought
(oh wait, it was the 70's..nevermind). Then she disappears. Maybe she just
hopped out? How do you know it's a pool of tears on the seat? I
know, because that sounds better than puddle...or piddle. He didn't see
her leave, he was amazed. Why? You drove her home, she got out - you
wanted a good night kiss too?
He goes to the door to ask her parents why Bo is so strange. It's probably got
something to do with being female and named Bo. Kids can be so cruel ya know -
Little Bo Peep - go find your sheep, no wonder why her mother is sad. Her father is
mad because there is some long-haired rock n' roll singer at the door asking about his
daughter. I know my father would be mad.
Ok, so she drowned at Misty Water. She did?? <just kidding>
Years ago, when this song started.
She just wanted a ride home? No haunting kiss, no ghastly
apparition to follow him throughout his years? Pretty lame ghost if you ask me :-)

This song brought back my childhood. I LOVED these sorts of ghost stories. These
were the "comic books" that I loved to read...very romantic...sad, not scary,
with a hero of sorts. These were the stories that we would pretend--the beautiful
woman who was trapped forever until she met the one man who could save her ... except
this time, HE has arrived, but he still can't do anything.
It was such a common ghost story, a traveler picking up a hitchhiker, only to find the
person had disappeared later. Sometimes the hitchhiker is on his/her way home,
sometimes the hitchhiker is trying to save someone from the same fate. Luckily,
there was always someone around to explain to the befuddled traveler what had
happened. Why did ghosts have to become scary? Maybe I just had to grow
up. :(
I wonder why Rick's vocals are so purposefully flat at certain points. I'm sure it
MEANS something, but other than making the listener take notice, I'm not sure what he
wants.
I love the music, the piano, in this song is beautiful, very rhythmic, like Elton
John.
"she was sad, he
was mad", oh, boy, he must have spent HOURS pulling that rhyme together.
(ahem!) not one of his better lines, in my honest opinion, but I love this
song. I wanted to be the misty water woman, the one HE (hero X) longed for.
<<sigh>> It doesn't matter that she was dead, she was still
desirable. (how do some women pull this off????) Anyway, it fits w/ the theme
of "born out of time", wanting someone out of reach. Maybe Bo was the "fallen" daughter that they'd kicked out for being
pregnant years ago.... hmm....
The protagonist finds and falls in love with a
mysterious woman, only to discover in the end that she's a ghost. A spirit haplessly
wandering, clinging to a life that she lost tragically and long ago. Rick uses his voice
to great advantage here to punctuate the haunting music. He begins the verses in a soft,
sexily shimmering timbre and ends them with a poundingly forceful rock 'n roll howl, very
effectively showing his frustration.
Rick's fascination with the macabre often seems to revolve around life after death and
this song is the perfect example (another one would be "Forever" and Rick's
re-vamping of the entire Houdini segment of EFX Alive). We'd all like to have a lost love
come back to us. It's sad to think that someone, anyone has had their life suddenly
snatched away before really experiencing its joys. This yearning is expressed so
beautifully in this song by our budding genius of a songwriter...our Rick. *Spooky*
This is one of my favorites from the old releases.
But it's not the lyrics that I like, it's the music. I like the melody line
in the chorus part a lot. It's the best part of the song. The story is nice...
I would have liked this song a lot had I heard it when I was younger. It's a
cool song.
There's not too much about this song that I like.
In fact, I only like the closing music. I get the story he's telling about a
ghost right away but I don't find it compelling and I don't really hear how seeing this
ghost
affects the story-teller. The song is very drawn out for the disappointing,
non-dramatic ending it has.
Ooooo I like this one. I am not going to review the lyrics, because I
think they are pretty straight forward. :o)
This song reminds me a lot of a lot of the "epic" storytelling songs of the
70's. The one that first pops to mind is the song "Wild Fire".
The line that give me chills is "I said we're here, but she had disappeared. And on
the seat was a pool of tears". LOVE that line.
I'm not a big fan of this song. I think it's the tune, it just
doesn't grab me. It's almost like he has to stretch out some of the words to go with
the melody, and I'm thinking it should be the other way around. The one thing I do
like about this song is that it tells a story and has some depth to it, which some of the
previous songs are lacking for me. And, as in most of the songs, early and recent, I
still do like his voice. And you have to give him points for squeezing in the word
apparition.
I'm not really fond of this song
either. I do like how he says "hanker-chief"!! Cracks me up every time. Probably
not the mood Rick was going for with this song.
I hate to admit it, but the more I listen to this song, the more
I like it! His voice sounds great to me and I love the long drawn out ending. I would like
to know what is meant by "our talk grew warm". And I'm just making a guess but
maybe this was around the time the movie "10" came out with Bo Derek in it--the
main scene being when voluptuous "Bo" walks out of the ocean in a bikini with
her "hair all wet and tangled" and looking damn gorgeous!! That is just
the first scene that popped in my mind when I heard the ghost was named Bo. I know
some of you young ones may have no idea about this movie or Bo Derek---I'm ancient --like Rick!! lol
I remember hearing a ghost story quite similar to this song, but
I believe the girl was going to her prom. I am actually a ghost story addict.
