DON'T WALK AWAY

Rick Springfield Don't Walk Away Video Don't Walk Away - The Video

FAN REVIEWS:

I LOVE this video. I love the way it was shot. All the dark scenes with the cool lighting. The whole transitioning scenes with the paintings thing, rocks my world. I love that kind of stuff and it was REALLY well done in this vid.

I love his intensity at the beginning when he is in the club at the table with the table cloth all fisted up. Man, that just grabs me. The use of lighting in this whole thing was really cool.  This is such a powerful song to me and the loss and sadness really come through in the video.

I re-watched this video over the weekend. I don't remember seeing this being played much back in the day when MTV played Rick videos regularly. I think I know why after watching this in 2002. I came up with a few points to address...

Why is there a succession of women leaving Rick? I think the video would've made more sense if he was at least chasing the same woman through the whole video.  This just makes him look like a "man whore" (see the movie Deuce Bigelow for definition) The "character" Barbara played really made no sense...if she was a flight attendant, she was just (in a sense) going to work, not technically leaving him. If she was going off to war (as it looks somewhat 1940s-ish) why isn't Rick? Usually that "going off to war" theme is opposite, with the man leaving on the train and the woman longingly waving good-bye from the platform.

The wedding dress woman made sense for the song (couldn't face the heavy commitment of a marriage) ...but what the heck??? She jumped overboard and swam away?? Totally not believable...but Rick is quite the hottie in the tux. So I'm thinking that was the theme of that idea, get the man in a tux (always a plus).

The biggest faux-pas I'm going to point out is the ending. The woman obviously FREAKIN died. Unless she committed suicide to get away from Rick (which in itself shows signs of delirium) she wasn't walking away from him. It was interesting to see however, that Rick will still be a hottie when he is 75.  He'll be the best damn lookin' grandpa in the ol' nursing home, eh?

All in all, I seriously hope the person who came up with the concept of this video wasn't Rick and was fired after the production ended.

This one is not one of my favorite Rick Springfield videos.  Don't Walk Away is one of my top five favorite Rick songs too, so you would think that would help.  I ALWAYS think of the scene from the movie and not the video when I hear the song.  Perhaps it is because of my strange obsession with that dang pea coat!!!  It will haunt me forever.  But those scenes where he is walking around the town looking for (ugh) Diana appearing so sad wearing that coat...whew.  It is magical.  I  know I am the only one that will think this, please don't throw rotten eggs at me, but that coat makes Rick 10 times more sexy than when he is running around "dropping the towel" for us all!!!   Oh, but wait a minute...this is a review of "Don't Walk Away", sorry, blame it on the coat.

The video is really dark, in mood and in actual footage, which I don't care for.  Rick seems so psychotic doubled over in pain singing about this girl, again, this is not a right or normal thing for Mr. Springfield to be doing.  The backwards water scene freaks me out.  Rick appearing old and feeble at the end freaks me out.  The only interesting factor is that Barbara was in it.  I did not know that was her at the time but I always thought to myself "wow, I bet his girlfriend HATES that kissing scene"!!!  Too funny...little did I know.  It makes sense now that it was SUCH a realistic scene......it is nice to know it was Barbara.  When you are young (naive and stupid) sometimes it is easy to jump to conclusions.  I always thought because he used the same girl in "Don't Talk To Strangers" and "What Kind Of Fool Am I"....that HAD to be his girlfriend!!!!  I practically had those two married off somewhere!

I guess my favorite part of the video would be where he is chasing the girl (again, another not-worthy-to-be-in-the-video-with-him-caliber-of-girl) by the sea.  This is only because he is wearing a bow tie and he looks handsome.  But then, he always looks handsome, even doubling over in psychotic pain.

This is not one of my favorite videos.  I think my main problem with it is, I just don't get it.  I can't figure out what kind of concept they were going for in this one.  I do kind of like the opening frame, with Rick rising out of the water, yet is all dry.  Kind of like a backward Baptism.   He just seems a little too psychotic in the video.  And the point of the song is basically that he's so in love with this one woman and that she's the one and only woman for him, yet there are 3 different women within the video.  I guess maybe it's supposed to be 3 different time periods (or 3 different lifetimes) or something.  I have no clue. The best part is that his wife makes a short appearance in the video, so it gives it some historical value and they have a great kissing scene (guess there was no holding back on that one).  I never think of the video when I hear the song, I always think of the scene from the movie where it was playing.

I just love the idea of Rick saying he's "not afraid" of commitment! I always picture him doing this song live in BOTLD when I hear it. The way he pumps his arm..... LOVE that! We get a little of that in the video but not as much. I have to say the video does not do anything for me. I get a kick out of the Barbie part but other than that....not so hot!
