God Gave You to Everyone

(Rick Springfield)

I never wanted anyone
as much as I want you
While you were making everyone
I never had a clue
No matter how you treated me
I'm still in love with you

Can't kick the feeling that the
more I give  the more I owe
I'm walking through the garden
of the sun, it's raining though
I'm waiting for your kiss of life
but it's not gonna show

God gave you to everyone
In your summer of love
God gave you to everyone
Cause I'm not enough

We can't all be all things to everyone
You'll never spend your whole life
standing in the sun
You make, make me feel I don't mean
anything to anyone

Looking for the kiss in your mouth
Living at the edge of my skin
Standing on the roof of heaven
With the devil as it crashes in

God gave you to everyone
you told me so
God gave you to everyone
Oh Domino

God gave you to everyone
In your summer of love
God gave you to everyone
Cause I'm not enough

(total playing time 2:36)

I really like the verses on this song (yes, there are a couple of songs on this CD that aren't my favs - we just haven't gotten there yet). My fav part is the sound of his voice when he sings 'raining though', but I keep hearing 'raining on'. I don't have any deep insight into this one.

I would like to hear it live :o)

Again, I get the "feeling" that this song was written from the prospective of a younger and much less successful Rick. The line "in your summer of love", reminds me of 1968, hippies and finding yourself, which is exactly what Rick was doing at that time. Rick was just starting out, discovering his talent and perhaps falling in love for the first time. But of course at that age, the "girl" in the song doesn't realize what a "catch" she has in our Rock God and soundly rejects him. This girl is obviously, of loose moral character "while you were making everyone, I never had a clue". But Rick loves her and is "clueless" as to her infidelity. Our hero, of course knows he's gonna do big things in the MusicBiz, but he isn't quite "there" yet, "standing on the roof of heaven with the devil as it crashes in", is a reference, I believe to Lucifer's "fall from grace"once an ArchAngel, the devil has pissed off the Almighty and has been banished to Hell, which is kinda like all the "crashes" that Rick went thru in his early career. This analogy is a bit of a stretch, but I'm determined to find the "inner truth" of s/d/a/a......it's not just a bunch of "angry, pissed off songs". The line "cause I'm not enough", seems to indicate a younger Rick as well, still insecure and not yet self assured.

As always, Rick's song writing takes a lot of different "tacks" and is deeper than just the "surface" story. Since Rick has said that he "hates explaining songs", we are forced to find the hidden meaning for ourselves. Maybe that's what Rick intended all along.

I love the lyric "Can't kick the feeling that the more I give, the more I owe". I also like "You make me feel I don't mean anything to anyone." Oh, and there's "Looking for the kiss in your mouth. Living at the edge of my skin". I guess I like this song for the little tidbits that I connect with. This song makes me think of what it would be like to be married to a celebrity or something. You feel that you give more
than you get and you share that person with everyone else.

I used to like this one a lot when I first got this CD. Then it kind of fell out of my top five, so I was waiting to see if my feelings would change back towards liking it a bit more before conveying my thoughts. That idea hasn't worked, so I'm not sure what's gonna come out now. So here goes....

I was extremely fascinated by the woman's (girl?) voice snippet at the beginning of this song. So much so that I spent weeks trying to decipher exactly what she was saying. It pissed me off that I couldn't hear it clearly. Ok, I know that's probably what Rick wanted, and you know what they say about curiosity and the cat and all. So I stopped trying to figure it out. I thought maybe that was why I really wasn't listening to it much anymore. So I tried to ignore that part of the song and concentrate on the damn song itself. (see, a little pent up anger is still seeping out there)

The other thing that bugs me about this song, is that Rick seems to be spitting out the words instead of singing them here. At least at the beginning it seems that way to me, by the chorus he seems to have calmed down. I'd really love to see him do this one live, to see if there is any change in how this song is projected.

There are some awesome lyrics here, I will say that. I hate the use of "while you were making everyone". Making?? What year is this, 1955? I really didn't think anyone used that term anymore. However, I can over look that one as the rest of the song is a keeper. "Can't kick the feeling that the more I give the more I owe" all the way through "looking for the kiss in your mouth" really sounds like the Rick Springfield I'm used to hearing. It's because of these fine lyrics reminding me of the RS that I love that I continue to rank this song as one of the better ones on s/d/a/a.

I've been hooked on this song since the first time I played it! Rick's voice sounds great in this song, and is Rodger playing those drums or what?!?

I think it's so ironic that in GGYTE he doesn't care that she's seeing someone else..."I never wanted anyone as much as I want you. While you were making everyone I never had a clue" ...then in the  very next song (IDWAFY) he is definitely pissed off that she is seeing someone else...But everything you gave to me you went and gave away to anybody else with a dick... I think he definitely went full circle when he wrote these two songs!

It's just bittersweet that I like these angry songs so much because he must have been going through some really serious shit to write these. Oh well, I guess his anger makes us happy.

This is one of my favorites on the CD---mainly because of the music and the beat---I love several of the phrases and the way he sounds singing them---such as "Can't kick the feeling" and the one that first caught my attention on this song , and that I played over and over just to hear his voice, "its raining though"!! I love, love, love the way he sounds on this part---and boy, is he in love with this chick, cause he says, "no matter how you treated me, I'm still in love with you"! Most guys would just move on---and this must be one nympho chick if he's not enough for her! lol All I really take from the song is that he is in love with someone who has as much told him that he will not be the only one---that "God gave her to everyone"---but he still loves her anyway---sounds like she could care less if he leaves tho -"you make, make me feel i don't mean anything to anyone". My second favorite part, aside from "its raining tho", is

Looking for the kiss in your mouth
Living at the edge of my skin
Standing on the roof of heaven
With the devil as it crashes in

I love the way that all flows together ,altho, I am really not sure I understand what he is saying here. Hopefully someone has some ideas about this---

The first time I listened to the cd, when I got to this song, I remember thinking "I like this one best so far". However, that wore off pretty quick. I don't really like the verses so much, just kind of talk/screaming. I really like the Chorus and I love the one verse : "Looking for the kiss in your mouth....." I wish there was more of that in the song, although it's the change up that probably makes it stand out. I guess one of my problems is I really don't get this song or what it's trying to say. Rick says "it's about the person who feels that the rules of a relationship are for the other person only".

My best interpretation of this is that it's ok for her to mess around, but not him. "While you were making everyone", that's an interesting way to put it. It seems like she goes running off when things get bad and he's trying to say you have to work through the bad stuff because there's always going to be bad stuff. I really like his voice inflection when he says "it's raining though". This is also the one song that I didn't enjoy as much live. Every other song on the cd I've heard, I've liked it even better live. I really go back and forth on this song, so it'll be interesting to see how things have changed when we revisit this cd after some time has passed.

First of all ... what the heck is being said before the song starts??? Whatever it is, it sounds pretty kewl. LOVE the drums on this one ... especially when you first hear them. It's a signal to let the headbanging begin. LOL!! Definitely a song I can't listen to and sit still at the same time. "Looking for the kiss in your mouth.." DAYUM. That killed me the first time I heard it. He really has a way with words. This is one of the ones that would have been a good choice for the first single, IMO.

This is a song I knew I was going to love as soon as I heard the short clip of it on sdaa.com. Nothing better than a song that's good and pissed off, at least for me! Hmm, maybe that's why I love this CD so much... it has so many songs like that on here? While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, this is exactly the kind of thing that I wanted to hear from Rick for a change. I LOVE the other stuff , don't get me wrong, but I wanted some Rick songs to listen to for those times I'm pissed off about something, instead of having to dig out something else. I can't keep track of everything else I own, but I know where every one of my Rick CD's are. :-D

The most awesome part of this song (for me) is the verse "'Looking for the kiss in your mouth... Living at the edge of my skin... Standing on the roof of heaven... With the devil as it crashes in
I don't really have any idea on what it's supposed to mean (LOL) but it's my favorite part of the entire song.

From the words, to the sound of his voice when he sings it, to the music... everything about this part of the song sounds incredible to me. (And only someone without a drop of estrogen ISN'T going to be affected by the 'looking for the kiss in your mouth' part...*THUD*)

I'm going to have to file this one under anger. Even the delivery of this song has quite the attitude to it. More of those low end guitars for me too. Yipee! :o)

It's almost like he is just as angry at himself as in the other person. This person betrayed him and hurt him and yet his love for them is still there. He can't let go. "No matter how you treated me, I'm still in love with you."

One of the great lines in this song is "Can't kick the feeling that the more I give the more I owe." Man, that one packs a punch. No matter what he does, no matter how much he gives up it's not enough and not good enough. A no win situation.

Underneath the anger of this one there is also a lot of insecurity and self depreciation. You can feel it in the lines "God gave you to everyone, cause I'm not enough." There could be a million reasons for this person to have done what they did, but the "reason" or feeling he has is that it is in some way this was his fault. Somehow he wasn't worth it enough for this person to be faithful or committed. Then to nail that exact thought home there is also the line "But you make me feel I don't mean anything to anyone." That is a very sad statement and speaks to the extent that this person has crushed him. That one person can make him feel so bad about himself he completely feels there is no one that gives a crap about him, is truly sad.

No matter the hurt, it still goes back to that line in the beginning of the song. "No matter how you treated me, I'm still in love with you." What would we do for love? How do you walk away from something or someone that completes you?? What would you put up with or live with? In this case, a lot. He also knows the "price" he will pay. He knows it may one day all come crashing in around him. But he has made the choice, eyes wide open. "Standing on the roof of heaven with the devil as it crashes in."
