I must admit...I don't remember this song from the '60s...shocking, isn't it?. I do recall the Easybeats and their big hit "Friday On My Mind".....*Monday I've got Friday on my mind...* But "I'll Make You Happy" escapes me, so I have no comparison to the original. However, I love Rick's version. The music really fits in well with s/d/a/a....*a real rocker, that sounds fabulous "live"...* and the lyrics are reminiscent of Rick's early '70s sexual angst songs. I can only assume that Rick"rocked" this tune up a bit, since it sounds so contemporary, with just enough "hippy-ness" to make you wanna put on your white go-go boots, spangled mini-dress to climb into your "cage" and dance your "tootsies" off. The story sounds like a typical young "stud" trying to pry a sweet young thing from her provincial life, parents and another suitor. Rick wins...hands down!!
OK since Rick didn't write this (and I'm not familiar with the original version) it isn't his "meaning" behind the song but I think I know why he liked it - GUITAR!!!
A favorite of Rick's from his youth. I love to listen to this song the music is really upbeat and it makes me happy.
I do like the way Rick starts out the lines by singing the first word than the two, then three etc. If that kickin' guitar doesn't grab one's attention, nothing will! I LOVE how he blended the ending of "Perfect" and the beginning of this song. That is perfect in itself! This is another one of those hi-fi/low-fi songs Rick talked about. It starts out with the pedal down, building with a few drum licks and more guitar, flowing into the first...and then something cool that sounds like a sigh or a moan of frustration (it's probably the symbol, but it sounds like a vocal sigh). I love it immediately. The guitars and the blending of the instruments in this one are enough to satisfy any headbanger! I went and listened to a sound clip of the Easybeats version of this song, and I can tell you, compared to this one, it stinks. (sorry Rick, I know he says he has a special and sentimental connection to this song, but I can't help it! I don`t care for the original.) He just MADE this song in my opinion. Rick totally kicked this song into high gear and gave it a new life. When I first got SDAA, I listened several times before I ever read the CD cover (which is unusual for me, it's usually the opposite). I was shocked to learn it was a cover. So apparently this song seemed to me like something Rick would write. Maybe because of the sarcasm in the lyrics and the tongue-in-cheek qualities throughout: "I'll make you happy, just like your mama wants. I'll make you happy, just like your daddy says, I`ll make you happy, just like your mama wants to be" or maybe I thought it was his song just because of the great way the music is put together. I really don't know why! Along with the masterful guitars that make me want to drive like a maniac or dance around with an air guitar, the lyrics in the verses are my favorite part of this tune. I absolutely LOVE how each verse is set up, "I, I give, I give you, I give you love," and "If, if you, if you don't, if you don't think." It leaves the listener hanging on...if you what? I give what?! And the way Rick sings those verses!!!!!!!! (it literally sends shivers up my spine!) WHEW! Can his voice be any deeper or more sultry than here?! This song ranks in my top 10 of sexy-voiced Rick songs! I about melt every time I hear that 1st "you" in "if you" (from the second verse), and also the way his voice kind of cracks in the word "don't" during "if you don't think." He has an incredible gift for making the listener feel the raw emotion behind the words! I kind of feel like this song is a mix of denial and anger. The anger seems to flow through the music, and the denial comes from the words themselves. Especially in the 1st verse: "Give you lovin' all the time. Give you feelings just like wine, does his lips taste sweeter than mine? No, NO, NOOO!" Oh and I can't forget the angry emotion in his voice as he says, "Like me, Me, MEEEE!" That is so in-your-face, the way he sings that "me" part! Now I know he didn't write this, but lyrically I think it fits into the theme of the 4 stages of healing. There may even be a little bit of shock in there too. How could she want someone else to hold her hand in love?! Especially when he can make her happy? I really like how they added the "whoo's" in the background towards the end. That pretty much sums up how I feel when I hear this tune: "whooooo!" I will never tire of this song OR the SDAA CD. It truly rocks! |
Fan Reviews I'll Make you Happy: More loud guitars, and I'm in heaven. I like how each verse starts out as a repetition that's added to it. And I love the way he belts out "me...me....ME!!!!!!" Love that yie, yie, yie, yie part too. There's just something about it.
This was completely NOT what I thought it was going to be. I was figuring something that didn't rock quite so much, so it was a very nice surprise! Knowing that it was a cover, I really didn't expect to like it as much as I did. And for some reason, I was under the misconception that it was going to be a slow-ish kind of song. I guess because of Rick saying (paraphrasing here) this was the first song he ever slow-danced to with a girl? (Obviously, I've never heard the original version of this one.) I think anger fits the overall feel of this song very well, but there's also a bit of shock in there as well, I think. As if the underlying thought is "How can she not see that I am the one that can make her happy?? How can anyone else possibly make her feel the way that I do?" There's kind of a touch of denial in there, too, in the line "Does his lips taste sweeter than mine? No...no.... no" This one pretty much covers the bases, except there's absolutely no acceptance here about the situation! Great song, and there's not a single thing I dislike about it. I don't care if Rick didn't write this song. I love it! I just want to get up and dance the pony to it. (Am I showing my age here or what?) It is so upbeat and "happy", but I still think he is in denial if he thinks he can "make" someone happy. Either they are or they're not. He can only be himself and if that makes the other person happy then great, but, if it doesn't, then it's the other person's problem not his. I remember when we first heard about this song and we found the wav of it and I listened to it, and I thought "uh oh, not even Rick Springfield can make this sound good". Boy was I wrong. I love this song. I love the way it starts out with one word, then repeats and adds the second word until the whole sentence gets sung out. After hearing Rick's version several times, I went back today and listened to the Easybeat's version again. I was expecting it to sound really different and really horrible. It actually doesn't sound all that different. Just slower really.
Something I just now thought of is the fact that he thinks he can make her happy is somewhat a bit of denial in itself, one person can't be the source of another person's happiness, you're setting yourself up for failure every time if you rely on that. The person has to find the happiness within themselves. I kind of liked the anger argument, with maybe some of the stuff being sarcastic "I'll make you happy, just like your mama wants....just like your daddy says" ....maybe he's angry because he can't be what her parents want and she's trying to please her parents and he's saying find someone who makes your parents happy, but will their lips be as sweet as mine. Since I really have no interest in digging into lyrics that Mr. Springfield didn't write, I'm just going to speak to the music of this one. I have to admit when I first heard the clip of the original version of the song, I totally thought this song was going to be horrible. RS remaking it or not. But boy oh boy did he prove ME wrong. Rick's version rocks. Quite literally and quite hard and I love it! If we had to say goodbye to Affair of the Heart as the show opener, he definitely picked a great one to use in it's place. It sets the tone for the rest of the show and that tone is E N E R G Y. I love the growly guitars. Low end guitars rock my world. There are plenty of them in this one. That is one of the things I really like about a huge part of this new CD. There are heavy guitars galore. Whoo Hooo!! Or should I say just Whoooooo! :o) When I first heard this one was a remake, and did what everyone else did -- Googled it and then listened to the original, I thought there was no way Rick could make this one sound good. I stand corrected. I was literally driving in my car (listening for the first time) with my mouth hanging agape. I loved it immediately.
