Angel
Hey Sha Na Na Na
Song Facts: This can be found on The Day After Yesterday, Limited Edition. When this song begins I really like it, it has that "old LP" sound to it. The crackling noises like you are listening to an actual album make it interesting. I like the "Yeah Buddy"....only up until the part where he says " Yeah, she's no angel anymore, Ain't that right, honey? " then we hear "Yeah Buddy " again. For some reason that doesn't fit together for me. This one has a happy, upbeat, enjoyable rhythm to it, but that darn "sha na na na" mess has to go. UGGHH!! Don't have any idea what he was thinking when he put that in there. I think that's really the only part I can't stand. I love the guitar parts at the end, definitely my favorite part on this one. Angel is a "good" one in my book, but not one that I have to listen to over and over. |
I really don't care for this song. I'm not sure whether it's the content, the cliches ("deer in your bright headlight") or the use of the "yeah buddy" which I've gotten used to being in "Will I?", but it seems way overused in this song. He actually uses the word "creep" in this song. Creep, for a man who introduced us all to the words "moot", "parallax", and worked the word Gethsemane into a song. It just seems a little like a cop out. Then again, this is a demo and there is a reason that it didn't make it on a record.
However, I really LOVE this line: I must have made this all up, the empire of you But for one moment there, I think it was true That one line could nearly redeem this song for me. :) Many times I have found that one line can redeem an otherwise banal song for me. (Not that I think Rick HAS too many banal songs.) And that is a BRILLIANT LINE - "the EMPIRE of you" dang, he was into this chick!
HOWEVER.... I think he was so guilt ridden about it! Which first tells me that "the EMPIRE of you" is maybe a metaphor for the unattainable power / control she had over him, that is most akin to Empire, in my way of thinking. But that also brings me to the infamous hips/lips/ass line. I don't really care for it except as a joke. It is a great punch line, but as for lyrics, it is a bit too Penthouse Forum for me. Give me "when your legs are shaking" any day. That creates an image of passion for me, not just sex. Also, as for the song, I think it is kind of an insult to the woman he's singing about. She's an EMPIRE, she's "so right" but he apparently is not looking her in the eye when they make love. Unless her ass is on her stomach - LOL! The song, to me, is great for the pure entertainment value of it, I love to take the Mickey out of the "yeah buddy" stuff and the Sha Na Na and deer in the headlights. Odd lyrics, not up to Rick's abilities, so they make me laugh. But as someone pointed out . . . "he's special, so fucking special," you have to either laugh with him or give him credit for trying :-) That's the great thing about Rick for me, even when he gets it wrong (in my opinion) he can still provide me with endless amusement! "My mouth, your lips....your ass against my hips" Not surprisingly, that is my favorite line.
I love the visual opener to those lines, "Your body, my hands, I watch you dance"
This is just such a catchy little tune to me through and through. Makes me want to dance around. I also LOVE how he kind of growls when he says, "I grabbed, you slipped, pretty wings, they ripped" What a cool way of putting it! The "deer in your bright headlight" is a common phrase, but I still like it, it just fits this song to me.
Oh and I loooove the "yeah buddy" parts, Rick continues to amaze me. His writing is phenomenal. He can go from being a hopeless romantic, to blatantly sexual, to storytelling, to deep and meaningful lyrics, to religious imagery, etc etc...Well, you all know what I mean. He's just so flexible with his writing (and his body! wow, those kicks & jumps!). Hmmm...what can one say about this one?! Quite a bit. I find Angel to be a very sexy little number. The visuals this one brings to mind, beginning with the 1st verse! I used to wake up with the scent of you on my skin and I hate myself for wanting you like I do. (And my favorites) your body my hands, I watch you dance. My mouth, your lips, your ass against my hips. Wow! I really like the blunt nature of the lyrics in this one. My other favorite lyrics: and I hate myself for wanting you like I do And I grabbed, you slipped. Pretty wings, they ripped bYou know it, I'm a creep..I love how he changes it up a bit with each time he sings the chorus. He leaves out the ahs & ohs after hey! but then adds it in again hey ah sha na na na right before I was a deer in your bright headlight.
That sounds pretty cool, and for me adds a feeling of shock, that he can't believe he fell for this angel. I also like when Rick throws in some sha na nas to a song. It's safe to say that I love all the lyrics to this song. It's short, but sweet!
The yeah buddy sound bytes are just great! It couldn't fit more perfectly with this song. And it's placed in all the right spots throughout the song...not too many, not too few. I adore that little ahhh Rick does right after he says, I must have made this all up, the empire of you. Yow! He seems to go many different ways with his voice on this song. He has such a growly sound going on one minute, and then at other points sexy whisper. The music makes me want to dance around every time I hear it. I can't be still at all during Angel. The old record effect is cool too. For some odd reason...I am reminded of the J. Geils song Centerfold, every time I hear the chorus. It's saying totally different things. It may be in the music somehow. Just a feeling J I have no clue who Rick may have wrote this song about but whoever it was/is, it must have been pretty intense. Even though I don't know the story behind it, I still love it. It's one of my favorite new Rick songs. I feel it should have made the SDAA album. To me it would have fit in there beautifully! | |
