Broken Wings
(Page, George, Lang)

Lyrics:
Baby
I don't understand
why we just can't  hold on
to each other's hands
ooh, ooh, ooh

This time might be the last I fear
unless I make it all too clear
I need you so, oh, oh

So take these broken wings
And learn to fly again
learn to live so free.
And when we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up and let us in.
Take these broken wings

Baby
I think tonight
we can take what was wrong
and make it right.
I know we can

Baby
it's all I know
that you're half of the flesh
And blood that makes me whole`
need you so.

So take these broken wings
You've got to learn to fly
Learn to live and love so free
And when we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up for us

and let us in, yea, yea
 let us in

Baby
it's all I know
That you're half of the flesh
And blood that makes me whole

Yeah
yeah
yeah
yeah
yeah
yeah!
So take these broken wings
And learn to fly again
Learn to live so free
And when we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up for us and let us in.

Take these broken wings
You've got to learn to fly
Learn to love and live so free
And when we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up for us
and let us in, yea, yea, yea yea
and let us in......

Song Facts: This was the first single from The Day After Yesterday.  Rick first performed this song in Rockford, IL and then at some of the shows after that, whenever he felt like it, apparently. :-P

I really liked this one when I was growing up.  I used to
roller-skate to it down in the basement with my rotating colored wheel light and my Garfield roller skates.  This was the first song I heard from thealbum.   I was able to get a radio station to play it a few times and I did really like it.  I love the ending where the voices of Rick and Richard Paige mingle.  I always love to hear Rick doing duets.

When I hear this song start to play on the radio (the original) I always turn it.  I never could really stand to hear it. There is something about the beginning that just "erks" me.  I can't exactly pinpoint what it is, but I could do without this one.  When I heard Rick was including this on a CD of songs he wished he had written, my only response was "WHY??"

But, I do have to say that Rick did a nice job with it.  Richard Page blends in so well with him on the lyrics, it's like they "belong" together almost.  I wouldn't mind hearing them do another song together, just please let Rick write it this time.

For me, this is another looong song, that definitely should have been shortened up a bit.  I really don't have much more to say about this one, because it sorta gets on my nerves....LOL

When Rick announced Broken Wings was the choice for the first single, I was sorely disappointed.  However, after listening to it many times, it's growing on me, I'm liking it a bit more, that much I will own up to.

After explaining to the parade of family members who have to come by the 'puter to find out what I'm listening to and hearing their comments, I don't know if that's what making me like it more or not.   My husband says it's sounds "strange and slowed down".  My kids think Rick sounds like he has a cold.  My brother was over, and had no idea it was Rick.   He said if anyone other than me had told him it was Rick Springfield, he wouldn't have believed them.   I didn't pursue that comment any further to find out if that was a good thing or bad.

As for my feelings, I just have to say that never has Rick done a song that makes me just want to lay down here with my head on the desk and melt.  I felt that he had done a great job with this live, and I just love the lighting effects going on when he does this, but hearing it as it was recorded actually sounds better.   I can't wait to hear this on the radio but I'm hoping I don't crash my car or anything if I happen to be driving when I do.

I love this song and I think the ruffness of Rick's voice adds to the emotion of the song.  I also love hearing Richard Page singing with Rick, especially the yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah part.  It would be so awesome if we ever got to see them perform this song together.

I was transported back to one of the first times I heard this song in the 80's. I can still see the
family room at a friend's house. There were a bunch of us there. Young adults. Mr. Mister's video came on MTV. I'd never seen it before. I think it may have been the first time I heard the song, "Broken Wings" as well. I was in the midst of my own personal identity and spiritual being crisis trying to find my place in the adult world of work, play, being single and what the heck does God have to do with any of this. Mr. Mister's video and the song itself, once I had my hands on a cassette that was then well worn, were one of those internal eye-opening epiphany's for me. I even remember thinking, at first, was that Springfield singing? Really!

So, a few score later it's a homecoming to hear Rick sing it. I love this version. I was afraid, as one often is with an anthem song, that a cover of it might just not "do it". This one does. Beatifically. That's not a misspelling. I meant it.  Magnificatically. This is hard to write because that song is very personal for me. It's a matter of spirituality and faith.

It had been some kind of trip hearing this song performed live in Rockford. With the added bonus of being close enough to see Rick's face and eye contact during the song. Like I said, personal. I sang along. No delusions of he was singing it to me.  Nope, if anything, I was singing it to myself and back to him. I'm certain he has his own personal feelings for this song. Obviously. It's on this Anthology! With Richard Page singing duet. So, hearing this recorded version, well, you learn something new everyday. I heard a line in it today and it went right down to my soul and not just my ears for the first time. "...your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...yeah, yeah" There are so many obvious at first sight meanings to that little line. I'm sure everyone can agree. Now, it's hit me as a matter of spirituality and faith, again. Like I said, personal. 'Nuf said.

Rick's version of Broken Wings has done wonders for me! Most probably won't agree on this one, but personally I like his take on it the best. When this song first came out, I liked it, but I never really "dove into" it like so many people did. It was one of those situations (and we've all felt this way I'm sure), where everytime the radio was on....there was Broken Wings, to the point of nausea. I hate to say it, but I got burned out so fast from it, that I tuned it out. When I saw the song title on Rick's CD, I thought, "oh...Broken Wings." Much to my surprise, I listened to it with a "new ear." Actually, it drew me in after I heard the first verse, whether I wanted to be pulled in or not. Rick has that power.

I can totally see Rick writing a song like this. It seems to fit him lyrically, and musically too. Especially the line, "you're half of the flesh & blood that makes me whole," which really sounds like it came out of Rick's head! I looove how he says, "I need you so," the second time and how he says, "mmm I know you can." Wow wee! Well I could go on forever quoting favorite vocal parts and raving about the amazing things he does with his voice in this song, but I won't. For those who've had the pleasure of hearing it, you already know what I mean. He has such a beautiful gift with his voice, and he is a master at using it. He hits some great high notes! (of course he's always had that capability) I've discovered a true love for this song that I either lost, or never had during the time of it's popularity. Thank you Rick!

Maybe it's that sultry, breathy way he sings it that makes it so desirable. (I keep referring to his voice as breathy, for lack of a better word! But that's how he sings so many of the covers from TDAY and it sounds amazing). The music is beautiful also! I adore the guitar solos at the end and the background voices (? or is it keyboard, not sure) that sounds like people singing, "ahhhhhhh." Whatever it is....it sounds magical. This is one of my favorites from TDAY....a real hit in my book :-)
