I really don't remember this song from the 80's. I definitely remember Human League, because I always thought the one girl looked a lot like Martha Quinn, and even wondered at one time if it was, I just don't really remember this particular song, and I sure don't remember the video. I really think this song needed a more masculine presence than what the original gave it, so that makes Rick's version a lot stronger and easier to listen to. I also think this goes with Rick's style and goes into the "he could have written this" for me. It has a little bit of a hint of "Faithful" in it. Infidelity with justification. This song kind of sugar coats it a little though. If you aren't listening carefully, you might not pick up on it. As a matter of fact, the verse that the female speaks, should go something more like this:
(These tears I cry aren't tears of pain) (They're only to hide my guilt and shame) (I forgive you now I ask the same of you) (While we were apart, I screwed someone, too) Also in the original, the blonde female speaks the part "I am just a man" which I find very weird, so I'm glad Rick put his voice in there. I really think this was a great song choice to go into the movie Nick Knight - he wanted to be human, but he wasn't, and it's interesting that it pops up again on TDAY. Like a lot of the songs on TDAY, this goes on a little too long. I really wish Rick would have shortened a lot of these. He was so vocal about that with the songs on SDAA (keeping them short), what happened? The song choices are just getting weirder and weirder. This one is for all of you humans out there! Those were the famous words of our
stations afternoon DJ. I had to insert it because I thought it was pretty funny. This song was in the Nick Knight movie I remember, when Nick was driving that caddy down the highway. I liked this song back then. It is strange to hear Rick sing it. The instrumentation is a little bit different. There is a bouncier, lighter, feeling to it than the original. That threw me off guard a little bit when I first heard it. I am totally obsessed with vampires and the connection that this has with the Rick-as-a-vampire movie makes it a cool song for the nostalgia. I love the keyboards in this, the piano part, and Ricks vocals are pure gold when they crack and have that seductive chalk edge to them. I loved this song in the 80's. Ok, who am I kidding - I still love this song. To hear Rick cover it on TDAY really sounded funny to me, funny in the way that something was wrong with it. I don't know how many times I heard this by the original group Human League - so in my head I'm hearing that version. When it starts up on Rick's CD, my brain is doing a fuzzy "huh?" for the first few words, then realization hits and I'm okay again. (I had this problem with Broken Wings as well.)
What's even more weird is now when I'm listening - it seems to have grown on me and doesn't sound so strange anymore. I caught the original version when I was out shopping somewhere - and suddenly THAT one sounded off. I know, I'm goofy... I live with me though, so I'm used to it. Welcome to my world. Every time I hear this, no matter whose version - I think of the movie Nick Knight. I guess I never realized what a strong presence this song had in that movie until this cover was made. The lyrics in this song fit perfectly for the movie in my opinion. I keep wondering now if that is why Rick chose it to cover on TDAY. These lyrics DO sound like something Rick would've written too....and I know I'm repeating myself, but I can hear it in the words. The music itself does sound like this song would've ended up on LIO had Rick actually performed it. Although he would've had two *Human* songs on that album, and him being the anal perfectionist he is, probably would've tossed one and I'm betting this would've been it. He has a little trouble hitting the high notes the original singer did, especially on the part "No one else could ever take your place" "place" sounding a little strained there. I always wince. Other than that flaw, I think he did a really great job covering this one. This is another one that I don't skip. | |
