Whenever I Call You Friend

Skit with Ron

I've Done Everything For You

WHENEVER I CALL YOU FRIEND
(Words and Music by Kenny Loggins and Melissa Manchester )

Whenever I Call You Friend
I begin to think I understand
Anything we are
You and I have always been ever and ever

I see myself within your eyes
And that's all I need to show me why
Everything I do, always takes me home to you

Now I know my life has given me
More than memories
Day by day we can see
In every moment there's a reason to carry on

Sweet love showin' us a heavenly light
I've never seen such a beautiful sight
Sweet love glowin on us every night
I know forever we'll be doin' it

Sweet love showin' us a heavenly light
I've never seen such a beautiful sight
Sweet love glowin on us every night
I know forever we'll be doin' it...right

Whenever I Call You Friend
I believe I've come to understand
Everywhere we are you and I were meant to be
Forever and ever

I think about the times to come
Knowin' I will be the lucky one
Ever our love will last
I always want to call you friend

Sweet love showin' us a heavenly light
I've never seen such a beautiful sight
Sweet love glowin on us every night
I know forever we'll be doin' it

I see myself within your eyes
And it's all I need to show me why
Everything I do, always takes me home to you, ever and ever

Now I know my life has given me more than memories, day by day
We can see
And every moment there's a reason to carry on

Sweet love showin' us a heavenly light
I've never seen such a beautiful sight
Sweet love glowin on us every night
I know forever we'll be doin' it, doing it

Sweet love showin' us a heavenly light
I've never seen such a beautiful sight
Sweet love glowin on us every night
I know forever we'll be doin' it, doing it,
(doing it, doing it) doing it, doing it, (doing it, doing it) doing it, doing it, doing it, doing it, doing it right!

Song Facts:

This song was performed by Rick and Cheryl Ladd on her special in which Rick was a guest.

This song was made popular by Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks

C'mon, admit it. When it started up and you gazed upon that pink suit (and no one but Rick could pull that look off in the 80's, I swear) you just wanted to scream, "Dr Noah Drake!". Sigh...I miss that look. But for a minute there, I felt 13 again. Yeah, this a cheesy song, yeah Cheryl's not that great of a singer, yeah Rick was stretching the voice a bit in this song too...but for some reason this clip just made me smile all the way through :-) Once Rick and Cheryl got next to each other, it kind of made me glad they had been apart for the beginning of the song due to the pangs of jealously hitting me when he gave her the "once over". Yowsa! I swear that was the actor in him coming out though, because he timed it just a bit too perfectly with the words of the song, eh? Rick's dance moves also remind me of a bit that Eddie Murphy did in his stand up "Raw" - about how white guys just cannot dance. Someone throw Rick a guitar, and quick! (before he wops Cheryl with one of those arms) The poor man just does not know what to do if there's music and no guitar in his hand, or a mic stand to lean on.

First let me apologize. Maybe I have been watching too much American Idol (LOL) but I am feeling like I will come across like Simon here. Now remember I am a Rick fan! So please do not hold this review against me. If it were not for a few really cute shots of Rick’s face I would be gagging - LOL! I now know why I do not remember Cheryl Ladd having a special! I thought the way they were separated until the very end of the song just plain sucked. To me this song screams passion and emotion - they did not have this. Oh, and did I mention that Cheryl can’t sing? Maybe we should have put a couple of handles on that tune for her. And Rick honey, I love ya, really and truly, but I was never a fan of the pink suit :( But the cut and style of it, ohhhhyaaaa! Looks good! I also wanted to mention that songs and TV appearances like this are maybe another reason why people didn't/don't take Rick seriously.

I guess it's situations like these where not having a good ear for music really pays off because I don't even mind Cheryl's voice. But then again, wasn't she a singer before she was an actress? I know she was one of the voices for the cartoon Josie and the Pussycats, but I don't remember if she did the singing or not.

This song has always put me in a good mood when I listen to it.  I think my favorite part of the performance visually is the way he looks her up and down during "I've never seen such beautiful site". I love his voice. I know that he doesn't have the greatest singing voice in the world, but I just love it, and I like his talking voice, too. I just love to hear him talk. I just can't help it, I really like this song. I think I even have (or had) the 45 of the single when it came out with Stevie Nicks and Kenny Loggins. It is missing the personal aspect of most of Rick's songs because he didn't write it, but it's just fun for me to listen to. It's different. And I love his voice. And fortunately for me, I don't mind Cheryl Ladd. I have this song on a compilation cd and it's just one that lifts my mood a little when it comes on.

Yes.....it was cheesy. Yes.....Cheryl can't sing. But I think that even makes it cuter. I know I cringe at myself when I look at my pictures from the 80's......but Rick was so young and adorable there. I think it adds to the charm. These old clips are priceless.

The performance is just so 80s. You can tell from watching it that Rick really wants to "rock" but is limited by the staging. Having to stand there until the end, when he can break free and move/dance a bit. And the voice has just not changed, the clip shows how adorable Rick was then and how his voice just makes you melt.  Although I have to admit that Rick looks a little strained by that little thin leather 80s tie. He looks like he'd want to get rid of that!

I can't remember where it was, but I read an interview with Rick where he said something like "You put on a pink suit, and on anyone else people would have thought 'that's a nice pink suit,' but on me, because of that image I had, it's bubblegum." That's not exact, but it's pretty close. It always made me laugh--I don't believe anyone, anywhere, has ever said "That's a nice pink suit."   It DOES seem to be something that will never be forgotten.

This is one of the "corniest" things I've ever seen Rick do, but I LOVE it!!! It just shows how truly popular he was back in the "old days" everybody wanted to book him!! He looks adorable, as usual and sings with an emotionally charged voice, to no avail, baby, Cheryl is like "stone".  Maybe I'm being a little "hard" on her, after all she's not really a singer. But I do get a kick out of the way she looks him up and down near the end of the song, when they are standing side by side, singing "I never saw such a beautiful sight". That "look" says it all...yum-yum. Rick also gives Cheryl the "once over" while singing that line, who says he can't act? LOL.

My opinion on the song: it's "OK" It's not my favorite Kenny Loggins song. But it's sweet in a syrupy kind of way.    The "set up" of the clip/song... too cheesy!!    Rick and Cheryl, especially at the end with those "moves",  EXTRA cheese. :) I love how someone put it, "Rick's dance moves also remind me of a bit that Eddie Murphy did in his stand up "Raw" - about how white guys just cannot dance. Someone throw Rick a guitar, and quick! (before he wops Cheryl with one of those arms) The poor man just does not know what to do if there's music and no guitar in his hand, or a mic stand to lean on."    Also, I don't think their voices are a good match. Of course, I like Rick's voice. :) Why couldn't he have just done the song all by himself? He could have looked right into the camera ... yeah, that would have been a good idea. :)

When I listened to the clip, I kept thinking "Wait For Night". Rick's voice has gotten deeper and more raspy as time has gone on. And I like that. Oh and I love his black hair in the clip. Isn't he just adorable?

I don't think the pink suit was a great idea. I agree with whoever said that might be part of the reason he wasn't taken seriously. Still, when they walked off at the end of the clip, I was wishing he wasn't wearing that jacket. ;)

Well, I think Rick sounds great in this clip! I love his voice singing or talking, there is just something strong and soothing about it. And like some others said, I ,too, smile all the way through this. I just think it is too cute!! I love the pink suit and those cute little dance steps. The only part I thought was extra special cheesy was Cheryl lying down on stage!! Too funny! Then we have Rick doing his infamous pole leaning during part of the song, I always love that. And oh, that look when they are side by side and he is looking her up and down, almost too much for me to handle.  Don't really like the song at all, but Rick looks so damn cute!! Wish I could have been Cheryl at the end with that hug, big smile and walking off arm in arm. Makes me wonder how good of friends they were?!

I was watching this clip and all of a sudden she is lying down and I thought "what the heck happened to Cheryl......did she have an attack? Did Rick make her weak in the knees??" Very cheesy! Then it dawned on me that maybe she was trying to be sexy???? I must admit I kind of liked how they were apart through most of the song, coming together at the end, but I am a sucker :) I also thought....."throw that man a guitar! The thrashing of the arms might knock Cheryl to the ground again " (Not that this would necessarily be a bad thing, more camera time for Rick!) The ending was the best, the look he gives her was the highlight! Oh to be Cheryl for a moment! I also loved the hug and the walking away arm in arm. When I look at him in this clip I get that fluttery feeling in my stomach I used to when I would see him on TV in the 80's - pure excitement. I know, grow up!!!! But I can't!!!!!

I am not sure how I missed this one when it originally aired back in the day. Cheryl Ladd was a "home girl" in my home state of South Dakota. Back then I really loved her especially since she was from my home state. I thought it was so amazing that someone from there could be a big star. She was from Huron, South Dakota, which is actually the site of the South Dakota State Fair where I saw Rick for the very first time. :o)

The thing I find hardest to watch about this clip is the camera work. Eeeeeekkkkk. The way they are separate for most of the song, the way they have them staring off into space as they are singing with each other in the back ground. It feels so stiff and forced. Not easy to watch. Cheryl actually looks like someone has a gun to her back making her lounge on the floor singing to Rick. <shudders>

When they finally put them together it is a little better. Although, we then have Rick's little "I don't know what to do without a guitar" dance. Whoa the dance. Ahhhhhh!! :o) The look up and down, I have to admit, is very nice.   I am not even going to talk about the pink suit. I'm just not.... ;o)

I do like the song. It is something a little different for Rick. No doubt. Actually Cheryl can sing. Her voice just isn't anything special. Pitch wise she is pretty much right there.

Well, I watched this and aside from the pink suit, Rick looks beautiful!   His voice is perfect for the song. I've never really liked this song, but Rick sings it well. Cheryl Ladd sounds ok. Rick's voice certainly drowns out hers, of which I'm glad. He's doing that deep throaty tone and it sounds very sexy. I think he looks adorable dancing with the fists and using them as part of his expression. To me that is Rick. He did that in either IDEFY or DTTS. Can't remember which one, but I've always liked that. And the hug at the end, a definite Rick hug!!

Am I the only one who liked the pink and purple suits?! Not many men could carry off wearing these colors but I think he does it! These colors are beautiful against his skin.

I just grinned like a big dope watching these clips. They're so cheesy, they made me happy. I thought Cheryl sounded nice and while I thought the song was all wrong for Rick's voice, you know I love to hear him sing anything.

The staring upward thing I found more odd then cheesy. I don't quite get why they had him focus on something that was up. His discomfort of standing without a microphone or guitar was apparent but he was trying so hard to get into it that you just gotta love him!
